The Federal Government’s final Nigerian repatriation flight from South Africa touches down in Lagos on Wednesday with 315 returnees. The flight is to bring back Nigerian nationals to prevent any form of xenophobic attack on them.
This marks the fifth evacuation flight exercise that began on June 11, with a total of 1,141 Nigerians evacuated, following a wave of xenophobic attacks and rising insecurity targeting Nigerians in South Africa. The foreign affairs minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed the death of at least 4 Nigerians since the unrest began.
Including Nigeria, more than 35,000 people have been repatriated or deported from South Africa since early June. Meanwhile, the Nigerian government says it remains committed to the safety of its citizens abroad, with tension in South Africa showing no sign of easing.
