Super Falcons Lose to South Africa, World Cup Dream Over

The Nigerian Super Falcons lost their World Cup qualifying chance after their disappointing loss to Bayana Bayana of South Africa in the World Cup qualifier match in Casablanca. This loss marks the first time they will not feature in the world cup since 1991.

The Bayana Bayana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Thembi Kgatlana, before Refiloe Jane doubled their lead in the 77th minute. Nigeria were handed a late lifeline when a South African player was shown a second yellow card following a VAR review, but they couldn’t capitalize as they could only respond with a late penalty.

Following the disappointing WAFCON campaign and World Cup qualifier loss, the team captain, Rashidat Ajibade urged her teammates to demand more individually as well as collectively, via an interview.

What Went Wrong for the Super Falcons?

Nigeria dominated large spells of the match but failed to convert their chances into goals. The Super Falcons also came into the fixture off the back of their worst-ever WAFCON finish, having already been eliminated in the quarter-finals by Cameroon days earlier. That back-to-back pressure, combined with South Africa’s disciplined defending and clinical finishing, proved too much to be overcomed for the Super Falcons.
