NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf Dies After Eight Months in Office

Dr Aminu Yusuf Talban Wushishi, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), has died, barely eight months after assuming office.

Yusuf reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a brief illness. His death was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, who told Vanguard that the chairman died after a brief illness.

Yusuf, from Niger State, was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and formally assumed office on December 3, 2025, after his appointment was approved by the Council of State and confirmed by the Senate.

During his short tenure, he championed reforms in Nigeria’s civil registration system, including the nationwide rollout of the VitalReg digital platform for birth and death registration, which commenced in July 2026.

Details surrounding his burial arrangements and further circumstances of his death were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
