“My Electricity Bill Jumped To ₦4m” — Amaechi Says Atiku Will Restore Subsidy
Rotimi Amaechi says Atiku Abubakar will restore electricity subsidy in 2027, claiming his monthly electricity bill rose from ₦500,000 to ₦4 million.
Former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has said Atiku Abubakar will restore Nigeria’s electricity subsidy if elected president in 2027. Amaechi made this claim during ward visits across Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he delivered Atiku’s campaign message to its residents.
Amaechi Reveals His ₦500,000 Electricity Bill Is Now ₦4m
Criticising the electricity tariff regime under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Rotimi Amaechi claimed the removal of electricity subsidy had increased electricity costs for consumers. He cited his personal experience, saying his monthly electricity bill had risen from ₦500,000 to ₦4 million.
The ADC vice-presidential candidate also criticised the removal of petrol subsidy, linking it to higher transportation costs. He also argued that restoring electricity and petrol subsidies under an Atiku administration would help reduce the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Amaechi’s comments come as the Federal Government has plans to phase out electricity subsidy payments from 2027. The government revealed that it spent ₦3.14 trillion on electricity subsidies between June 2023 and December 2025, making the future of electricity subsidies a potentially significant issue ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
