Ronaldo breaks silence on Portugal walkout

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his dramatic departure from Portugal’s national team camp, revealing that a breakdown in trust with head coach Jorge Jesus was behind his decision to leave.

Ronaldo said Jesus initially presented a plan in which he would manage his minutes during the international window. However, ahead of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Norway, the coach unexpectedly asked whether he could play 30 minutes. Ronaldo agreed, warmed up from half-time and ultimately remained an unused substitute.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus had promised to explain the situation publicly, but the captain said the coach’s comments at the subsequent press conference were completely different from what had been agreed between them.

“The manager had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo said the incident represented the second time Jesus had failed to keep his word, prompting him to leave the camp rather than wait for what he described as another broken promise. Jesus, however, has disputed Ronaldo’s account of their agreement.

Despite his frustration, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for walking out of the camp and apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters.

“I shouldn’t have done it. The responsibility is mine alone.”

He went even further, saying his status as Portugal’s captain should actually make the punishment more severe rather than protect him from consequences.

“I’m not just any player. I’m the team captain, and that is an aggravating factor.”

Ronaldo also made it clear that he has not retired from international football. He said that once any suspension imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation is served, he will remain available to represent Portugal provided he is fit and performing for his club.

“After serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I have always been until now, to compete and win for our national team.”

The 41-year-old, Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, also suggested that a proper farewell will eventually come—but for now, his focus remains on competing for his country.
