INEC Candidate List Sparks Fresh 2027 Election Disputes

Political parties have raised concerns over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) final lists of candidates for the 2027 general elections, following the omission of several governorship aspirants and other candidates.

Among the prominent cases are the missing names of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Oladipupo Adebutu and Professor Isa Ali Pantami, respectively.

The development has prompted the party to engage the electoral commission in an effort to resolve the issue. The controversy extends beyond the PDP.

Reports indicate that other parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress, African Democratic Congress and Action Alliance, have also raised complaints concerning omissions from the published lists.

While some affected parties suspect administrative or technical errors, other disputes involve candidate nominations, party membership requirements and internal party disagreements.

INEC had not publicly confirmed that technical problems were responsible for the reported omissions as of the time of the reports.

The disputes could lead to further legal challenges as affected parties seek clarification and explore available remedies under electoral law.

The candidate lists are significant because they identify those cleared to contest the scheduled elections. Any unresolved omissions could affect the participation of candidates and the choices available to voters in the affected states.

The coming days will be important as the electoral commission responds to complaints and political parties pursue their efforts to address the discrepancies ahead of the 2027 polls.
