Girl Wakes Up in Coffin Hours After Being Presumed Dead

A 15-year-old girl in Guatemala has shocked her family and community after regaining consciousness inside her coffin during her wake, hours after she was presumed dead by her family.

The teenager, identified as Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, reportedly collapsed after experiencing severe chest pain on Saturday, October 10, in El Jocote, a village in Guatemala’s Quiché department.

According to report, her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac Tojín, said he believed she had died after observing that she was no longer breathing and that he could not detect a pulse while taking her to the hospital.

He subsequently abandoned the journey, obtained a coffin and returned home with her. The family began preparations for her wake without a doctor confirming her death or issuing a death certificate.

However, approximately eight hours after she was presumed dead, her mother, Lesvia Ríos, reportedly noticed movement inside the coffin. The teenager subsequently sat up, prompting alarm and astonishment among mourners.

Yuleidy was later taken for medical evaluation. She reportedly told her family that she had experienced intense chest pain and a feeling of heaviness before losing consciousness.

Authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the teenager came to be presumed dead without medical confirmation.
