Chris Brown Sentenced to Eight Months Over 2023 London Nightclub Attack

American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence by a UK court over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in 2023.

Brown appeared before Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, where the sentence was delivered following his guilty plea to affray in July. The sentence is suspended for one year, meaning he will not serve time in prison immediately.

The case relates to an incident at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair area on February 19, 2023. Prosecutors told the court that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a bottle during the confrontation. Diaw reportedly suffered injuries to his head and knee and received hospital treatment.

During the hearing, Judge Tony Baumgartner stressed the seriousness of the attack, noting the danger involved in repeatedly striking someone on the head with a bottle.

Brown had initially faced more serious charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm. However, those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to affray, an offence involving unlawful violence or the threat of violence that causes others to fear for their safety.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who was also involved in the case, pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended prison sentence.

The case has attracted widespread attention because of Brown’s international fame and previous legal issues. He was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 in connection with the nightclub incident.

With the latest ruling, Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment, although he could face further consequences if he breaches the conditions of his suspended sentence.
