7 Warning Signs Your Body Needs More Protein

Even little protein shortfalls can quietly disrupt your body’s daily function, long before anything looks wrong. Here are 7 warning signs your body could be asking for more protein.

1. Persistent fatigue despite enough sleep. Protein is a source of amino acids that help repair cells and regulate energy metabolism, so without enough, your body may struggle to sustain energy throughout the day.

2. Slow recovery after workouts. The muscle is largely built from protein, and without adequate intake, your body can not properly repair muscle fibers, often leading to cramping and prolonged soreness.

3. Thinning hair / hair that breaks easily. Hair is made of keratin (a protein) and low intake of it often shows up as increased shedding or brittle strands, though changes sometimes reflect nutrition from 2-3 months earlier.

4. Weak, slow-growing, or peeling nails. Like hair, nails depend on protein to stay strong, and low levels causes them to peel or break more easily than usual.

5. Dry or dull skin. Protein also helps the body produce collagen, which keeps skin resilient, so an insufficient intake of it can leave skin looking dry and slow to heal from small blemishes or cuts.

6. Getting sick more often. Protein plays a big role in maintaining the immune defense, so people who consistently fall short on intake notice they catch colds or infections more frequently than usual.

7. Mild swelling or fluid retention. While severe cases are rare, mild fluid retention with fatigue or weakness can be an early sign of low protein, particularly when paired with unexplained weight or strength changes.

Most adults need around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, though needs rise with age, pregnancy, and physical activity. If several of these signs sound familiar, reassessing your intake may be worthy, though persistent symptoms should always be discussed with a healthcare provider rather than self-diagnosed.
