Peter Obi Sets One Condition for Conceding 2027 Election

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he will accept defeat in the 2027 presidential election — but only if the election is free, fair and credible.

Obi made the position known during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, while responding to a question on whether he would concede if he lost the presidential contest.

The former Anambra State governor said the decision would ultimately belong to Nigerian voters, stressing that he would respect their choice if the electoral process genuinely reflected their will.

“If the election is free, fair and credible, I will. It’s the people who will decide who they want to serve them, and I will respect the will of the people,” Obi said.

However, Obi maintained his long-standing position that he won the 2023 presidential election, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Bola Tinubu the winner.

Asked why he did not concede after the 2023 election, Obi said he still believed the result did not reflect what happened at the polls.

“I did win. And as long as I live, I will maintain that I won the 2023 presidential election,” he said.

The 2027 race is already taking shape, with President Bola Tinubu seeking another term and Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures positioning themselves for the contest.

The opposition has also been engaged in discussions over the possibility of cooperation or a single candidate ahead of the election, although disagreements over who should lead such an arrangement remain.
