Foden Sent Off as VAR Controversy Overshadows Manchester Derby

Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday in a Manchester derby marked by a controversial red card and a lengthy VAR intervention.

The first major talking point came in the 23rd minute when City midfielder Phil Foden was shown a straight red card following an incident with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Foden, who was on the ground after an earlier challenge from Fernandes, reacted by kicking out at the United midfielder. Referee Michael Oliver immediately produced a red card, leaving City with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, City took the lead in the 60th minute through Erling Haaland.

The goal initially appeared to have been ruled out for offside, but VAR intervened and reviewed the incident for several minutes. The review determined that Haaland was in an onside position, while teammate Enzo Fernández, who was in an offside position, had not played the ball. The goal was subsequently awarded.

Fernández’s involvement, however, became another major talking point after the match. The Professional Game Referees’ body, Pro Ref, later acknowledged that VAR had made an error of judgment in the decision and said the incident should have been referred to the on-field referee for review.

United were unable to find an equaliser despite having a numerical advantage for more than an hour. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both struck the woodwork, while City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a late save to preserve the visitors’ lead.

Haaland’s goal ultimately secured all three points for Manchester City, but the Foden red card and the VAR decision surrounding the winning goal remained the major talking points from the 199th Manchester derby.
