Ronaldo Gets Portugal Recall as Jorge Jesus Begins New Era

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches, continuing his international career under new head coach Jorge Jesus.

Jesus announced his first Portugal squad on Friday, September 18, 2026, with the 41-year-old Ronaldo included among the 25 players selected for the country’s Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo’s inclusion comes after questions surrounding his future with the national team following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The veteran forward had previously indicated that the tournament would be his final World Cup, but he had not announced his retirement from international football.

The call-up means Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans as Jesus begins a new chapter with the national team. Jesus replaced Roberto Martínez following Portugal’s World Cup campaign and was appointed as the new head coach in July.
Portugal will begin its Nations League campaign against Wales on September 24 in Lisbon before travelling to face Norway on September 27.

The European champions will then play Denmark on October 1 and host Norway on October 4. Portugal enters the competition as the defending Nations League champion, having previously won the tournament in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain and their record international goalscorer. UEFA lists him with 146 goals for the national team, a world record in men’s international football.

Jesus has also made it clear that selection will be based on performance rather than reputation, meaning Ronaldo will still have to compete for his place despite his extraordinary record with Portugal.
