BioWare Is Closing: What Happened to the Mass Effect Studio?
BioWare is closing after more than 30 years. Find out why EA is shutting the studio, what happened to the next Mass Effect game and its legacy.

BioWare, the video game studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, has decided to close down after more than 30 years in the gaming industry. The Canadian developer announced the decision on October 21, 2026, confirming that early development on its next Mass Effect project is also coming to an end. This announcement marks a major turning point for a studio known for story-driven role-playing games that allow players to shape characters and relationships.
Why Is BioWare Closing?
BioWare’s closure comes amid a wider restructuring at its parent company, Electronic Arts (EA). According to reporting by Bloomberg, EA plans to cut over 400 jobs across the company, including around 50 positions at BioWare. EA has been reviewing its projects and shifting resources towards other titles, while the studio’s most recent release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, reportedly fell short of sales expectations.
Founded in 1995, BioWare built a reputation through their influential games such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins and the original Mass Effect trilogy. Its games became well-known for memorable companions, branching narratives and choices that could influence how stories unfolded.
The closure raises crucial questions about the future of BioWare’s best-known franchises, particularly Mass Effect and Dragon Age. However, the studio’s shutdown does not mean EA will permanently abandon either franchise. For now, the confirmed development is that the next Mass Effect project has been cancelled and BioWare is closing. The studio has thanked its players and acknowledged the developers who helped build its legacy over three decades.
