How to Check Your BVN: 3 Easy Ways Explained
Learn how to check your BVN in Nigeria using the USSD code, your bank's mobile app or a bank branch, with simple steps for each method.

Your Bank Verification Number (BVN) is an important part of your identity in any bank in Nigeria. You may need it when opening a bank account, completing various financial transactions or accessing certain banking services. If you have forgotten your 11-digit BVN, you do not need to enrol for a new one. Here are 3 easy ways to retrieve it.
3 Ways to Check Your BVN in Nigeria
1. Dial the BVN USSD code.
The quickest method is to dial *565*0# on the phone number registered to your BVN. Follow the on-screen instructions to retrieve your BVN number. The service costs ₦20, according to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). If the code fails, confirm that you are using your registered phone number and have sufficient airtime.
2. Check your bank’s mobile app.
You can also find your BVN by checking your bank’s official mobile banking app, if the feature is available. Log in securely and look under sections such as Profile, Account Information or Personal Details. The exact location varies by bank apps. If you cannot find the number, check your bank’s official help guide or contact its customer support.
3. Visit your bank branch.
If you no longer have access to the phone number linked to your BVN or couldn’t find a way to retrieve it through the other methods, visit your bank branch. Explain that you have forgotten your BVN and need to retrieve it. Take valid identification and follow the bank’s verification process.
Your BVN is a very sensitive personal information, so retrieve it only through official banking channels. Never disclose your banking PIN or one-time password (OTP) to someone claiming they need it to help you check your BVN. If you suspect your BVN has been misused, kindly contact your bank immediately.
