Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, is scheduled to be arraigned in a United States court on Monday, following his arrest by U.S. forces over the weekend.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Washington could launch further military action if Venezuela fails to align with U.S. demands to liberalize its oil sector and curb drug trafficking.
Speaking to reporters, Trump also issued warnings of possible military measures involving Colombia and Mexico, while claiming that Cuba’s communist government was weakening and could collapse without external pressure.
Officials at the Colombian and Mexican embassies in Washington declined to comment on the statements.
Trump’s remarks were made ahead of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro’s scheduled court appearance on Monday before a federal judge in New York.
