2027: Peter Obi Warns Against Vote Manipulation, Says Nigerians Must Defend Their Mandate

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and ensure that their votes are protected in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the call on Thursday during an NDC town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he said voters would no longer accept intimidation or attempts to overturn their choices at polling units.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that citizens must insist on having their ballots properly counted and their electoral choices respected. He also warned against attempts to manipulate the electronic transmission and viewing of election results, including through the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Obi further argued that voters should be prepared to stand together against intimidation at polling stations. He said the number of voters at a typical polling unit could outnumber officials, making collective vigilance important in protecting the integrity of the process.

The comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. Obi was formally affirmed as the NDC’s presidential candidate at the party’s special convention in Abuja in May, with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso selected as his running mate.

Obi’s latest remarks also build on his long-standing emphasis on electoral accountability, as he seeks to mobilise supporters and other Nigerians ahead of another presidential contest. Reuters reported that his return to the presidential race is expected to be a significant factor in an opposition field that includes other major contenders.
