Kwankwaso: 30 Governors Can’t Guarantee 2027 Victory

Vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has cautioned political parties against assuming that control of a large number of states will automatically secure victory in the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the remarks on Thursday at an NDC town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he argued that the performance of governments and the confidence of voters would be more important than the number of governors supporting a political party.

The former Kano State governor specifically challenged the belief that controlling more than 30 states would make defeat impossible, pointing to the 2015 presidential election when then-President Goodluck Jonathan lost his re-election bid despite the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlling a significant number of states.

Kwankwaso also criticised the performance of some governors, particularly in northern Nigeria, alleging that poor governance could make it difficult for some of them to effectively campaign for their parties ahead of the 2027 polls.

He further linked growing public dissatisfaction to issues including insecurity, poverty, unemployment and concerns over the management of government resources.

His comments come as political parties intensify preparations and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, with the NDC ticket featuring former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate.
