EU Sanctions Iranian Officials, IRGC Unit Over Strait of Hormuz Threats

The European Union announced a fresh round of sanctions against two Iranian individuals and a unit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), accusing them of actions that threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
The sanctions, unveiled on Monday, target the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy, alongside senior officials Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini.
The measures include asset freezes and travel bans within the European Union.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc was taking action in response to what it described as repeated threats to international shipping and maritime security in the Gulf region.
The sanctions represent the first use of the EU’s recently established framework aimed at penalizing those accused of obstructing lawful maritime traffic.
The move comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and growing concerns among Western nations over the security of commercial vessels operating in the region.
European officials warned that further measures could follow if threats to freedom of navigation persist, underscoring the bloc’s commitment to protecting international shipping lanes and maintaining stability in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
