The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended the credibility of the WAEC 2026 results amid growing complaints surrounding the outcome of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to WAEC’s Thursday statement release, the body specifically called out content creators and social media commentators for questioning the results’ credibility, and urged the public to disregard unverified claims.
According to the figures provided by WAEC; 1,950,726 sat for the exam, with 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54%, obtained credits in at least 5 subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. The results continued to attract attention as some candidates and raised concerns over withheld results among other issues encountered while checking their performance.
WAEC, however, said 167,486 results were withheld in connection with suspected cases of examination malpractice. Reasons cited were mobile phone use in exam halls and organised cheating in some schools. The affected candidates were urged to follow the council’s established process for addressing withheld results and presenting their defence where applicable.
Candidates whose results have been withheld should therefore monitor official WAEC channels for information on the complaint and review process. WAEC’s Nigeria office also maintains a complaint portal for candidates whose results have been withheld or held.

The exam candidates can check their results through the official WAEC Direct result-checking portal.
The platform requires candidates to enter their examination number, examination year, examination type and the e-PIN details before accessing their results.
The WAEC body has advised candidates to avoid unofficial websites or social-media links claiming to provide WAEC results, particularly where such platforms request sensitive examination or personal information.
