5 Cancer Types Increasing Among Younger Adults

Some cancers are increasingly being diagnosed among younger adults. Here are five cancer types researchers are watching and factors linked to their risk.

Cancer is often associated with older age, but some types are diagnosed more frequently among younger adults. Researchers have reported rising rates of several cancers in younger age groups, although the reasons vary by cancer type and may involve changes in risk factors, screening and detection.

1. Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer has become a major concern among young adults, with incidence increasing in people under 50 in several countries. Researchers have now linked the trend to factors including obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, smoking and bad dietary patterns, although these factors do not explain every case.

2. Breast Cancer

Breast cancer rates have relatively increased among some younger adults. The reasons can include changes in reproductive patterns, obesity, alcohol consumption, family history and genetic factors.

3. Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer, which begins in the lining of the uterus, has shown increasing incidence in some younger age groups. Obesity is one important risk factor because excess body fat can increase estrogen levels, which can contribute to abnormal growth of the uterine lining.

4. Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer has been increasing in some younger populations, although the trend is not uniform across countries. Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and inherited conditions can increase the risk of kidney cancer.

5. Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer remain one of the most common among older adults, but researchers have observed rising incidence in some younger groups. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, diabetes, family history and certain inherited genetic conditions.

This increase in some cancers among younger adults does not mean that most young people are likely to develop cancer. However, persistent or unusual symptoms should not be dismissed because of age, particularly when they continue or worsen over time.
