Deschamps Leaves France Camp After Mother’s Death

France national team coach Didier Deschamps is mourning the loss of his mother after the French Football Federation confirmed her passing on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old manager has returned to France to be with his family and attend her funeral, meaning he will miss France’s final group-stage match against Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The French Football Federation said Deschamps will also miss training sessions before the match, with his long-time assistant Guy Stéphan taking charge of the team in his absence.

France had already secured qualification for the knockout stage after victories over Senegal and Iraq, but the team’s final group game will now take place under emotional circumstances as players and staff support their manager during this difficult moment.

Deschamps, who led France to the 2018 World Cup title as a coach and also won the tournament as a player in 1998, remains one of the most successful figures in French football history.
