Lagos Police Commit to Protecting Oil and Gas Industry

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, vowed to ensure the security of oil and gas investments as the sector embraces digital transformation.

Speaking at the 2025 annual public lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Lagos Chapel, on Wednesday, Jimoh reaffirmed the police’s dedication to safeguarding critical infrastructure in the industry.

The lecture, with the theme ‘Transforming Energy: Digital Evolution of the Oil and Gas Sector,’ examined opportunities and security challenges shaping the industry’s digital future.

Jimoh stressed that security remains the foundation upon which successful energy transformation must rest.

He said the command had strengthened collaboration with the Armed Forces, NSCDC, FRSC, and DSS to enhance protection of lives, property, and installations across Lagos.

According to him, these partnerships have ensured joint operations, improved intelligence sharing, and coordinated strategies for effective security outcomes.

The police chief highlighted the role of technology, noting investments in command-and-control centres integrating alerts from smart pipelines, drone surveillance, and geo-fencing systems deployed by oil companies.

He warned of increasing cyber threats, including digital theft and sabotage targeting energy infrastructure.

Jimoh disclosed that the command’s Cybercrime Unit works with national and international partners to prevent, detect, and respond to such risks.

On infrastructure protection, he cited the Inspector-General’s creation of the Oil Producers’ Guard to secure facilities both physically and digitally.

He further advocated public-private partnerships for advanced digital security, including artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and automated threat detection.

“The command recognises that security is an enabler of economic growth. When businesses feel safe, they invest more, expand more, and create more jobs,” he said.

Jimoh praised the Lagos State Government, led by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for providing vehicles and security infrastructure through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

He also acknowledged the media as critical stakeholders in public sensitisation and crime prevention, pledging to deepen collaboration with journalists for trust and transparency.

Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, Jimoh reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, innovation, and partnership.

“Together, we can transform Lagos into a beacon of safety, innovation, and prosperity,” he declared. NAN
