Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the military officer who seized power in Madagascar, has announced plans to be sworn in as the nation’s new president on Friday.
“Colonel Michael Randrianirina will be sworn in as the President for the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar during a formal hearing,” Randrianirina said in a statement late on Wednesday, adding that the High Constitutional Court would perform the ceremony.
He also expressed readiness to engage in dialogue with the African Union amid growing regional concern.
The development follows Madagascar’s suspension from the African Union after a military coup ousted civilian President Andry Rajoelina.
Rajoelina, who was impeached by lawmakers after fleeing the country over the weekend, has denounced the coup, insisting he remains the legitimate leader.
His removal came amid escalating youth-led “Gen Z” protests demanding his resignation and increasing defections within the country’s security forces.
