Ronaldo says Goodbye in Spain’s late 1-0 win Over Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career comes to an emotional closing as Spain drops a late winner to eliminate Portugal in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup. Super subs Mikel Merino and Ferran Torres came on to combine for the 90th-minute winner.

41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo had confirmed before the game kick-off that the 2026 World Cup could potentially be his last World Cup appearance. He managed just 19 touches all game and couldn’t find the back of the net. He was visibly emotional, wiping away tears as he applauded fans after the final whistle.

Ronald finishes his World Cup career with 27 appearances, second to Lionel Messi with 30 appearances. Despite being the world’s all-time top scorer in international football with 3 major international trophies, the World Cup trophy was that one prize that eluded him.

Spain will now face Belgium in the quarterfinals. Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo as “an icon,” saying that the team will carry his example forward.
