Super Eagles Come From Behind to Beat Madagascar in AFCON Opener

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have started their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a comeback victory, defeating Madagascar 2–1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Nigeria fell behind in the first half after Madagascar took the lead, but Eric Chelle’s side responded strongly to turn the game around.

George Ilenikhena restored parity for the Super Eagles before Moses Usor completed the comeback, giving Nigeria all three points in their opening Group L fixture.

The result was particularly important for Nigeria after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Going into Friday’s game, the Super Eagles were under pressure to begin their AFCON qualification campaign with a positive result.
