U.S. Launches Naval Blockade on Iran as Failed Talks Deepen Gulf Tensions

The United States has begun enforcing a sweeping naval blockade on vessels linked to Iran, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict after diplomatic efforts collapsed over the weekend.

President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces would restrict ships entering and leaving Iranian ports, a move aimed at cutting off Tehran’s oil exports and economic lifelines.

The operation, led by U.S. Central Command, targets maritime traffic connected to Iran while allowing limited passage for vessels not bound for its ports.

The blockade follows high-stakes negotiations in Pakistan that ended without agreement, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader security demands, leaving both sides entrenched in a deepening standoff.

In response, Iranian officials condemned the move as illegal and warned of retaliation, threatening that if its ports are disrupted, other ports across the Gulf region could also become targets.

Trump struck a hardline tone, warning that any Iranian vessels approaching the blockade could face immediate military action, underscoring the risk of direct confrontation at sea.
