Tottenham’s Struggles Deepen after Liverpool End Carabao Cup Hopes

Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season took another blow on Tuesday night as Liverpool defeated them 3-1 at Anfield, sending Spurs out of the Carabao Cup in the third round.

Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead in the 21st minute before Cody Gakpo doubled the lead nine minutes into the second half.

Tottenham responded through Conor Gallagher in the 69th minute and briefly pushed for an equaliser, but Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made important saves to keep the Reds ahead.

Dominik Szoboszlai then settled the tie in stoppage time with a spectacular long-range strike, sending Liverpool into the fourth round.

The defeat adds to Tottenham’s early-season problems. According to Reuters, Spurs have now gone four consecutive matches without a win and have collected only two points from their first four Premier League games.

The club also narrowly avoided relegation last season, making the poor opening to Roberto De Zerbi’s new project particularly significant.

De Zerbi, however, remains confident that his side will improve once the team begins to click.

After the Liverpool defeat, he said Tottenham were suffering because of the results but insisted that the squad had shown the right mentality and could eventually score more goals and win more games.

With the Carabao Cup now gone, Tottenham’s immediate attention turns back to the Premier League, where they face Aston Villa next.
