Court Hands Nnamdi Kanu Life Sentence on Terrorism Charges

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on several terrorism-related counts.
Delivering the judgment, Justice James Omotosho ruled that Kanu would serve a life term for counts one, four, five, and six—penalties that could have attracted the death sentence but were reduced at the court’s discretion.
In addition to the life sentence, the court imposed a 20-year term and a separate five-year term on count seven, both without the option of a fine.
Justice Omotosho ordered that all sentences run concurrently.
Delivering judgment, he said “I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment for counts one, four, five, and six, instead of death sentence.
“With respect to Count Three, he is hereby sentenced to 20 years imprisonment without no option of fine.
“For Count Seven, he is sentenced to five years imprisonment without no option of fine. To extend the mercy, I hereby order that the sentence shall run concurrently.”
