Paraguay President Resigns Amid Banking Crisis

Paraguay has been thrown into political uncertainty after President Santiago Peña announced his resignation following a major banking crisis that has left millions of citizens unable to access their savings.
The crisis centres on Ueno Bank, one of the country’s major financial institutions, which was placed under resolution by the central bank over insolvency concerns.
The decision reportedly froze deposits belonging to approximately three million customers, leaving many families struggling to access money for their everyday needs.
The situation quickly escalated into nationwide protests, with citizens demanding accountability from the government.
The bank’s rapid expansion and its reported connections to political and business interests also raised serious questions about how it was allowed to grow without sufficient oversight.
Peña, who had been in office since August 2023, announced his decision to step down, saying the country’s stability and the welfare of its citizens must come first. His resignation has also intensified political uncertainty, with lawmakers already moving towards impeachment proceedings.
The country’s political leadership must now address the crisis and restore public confidence in its financial system.
