Iran Warns of Disrupting Gulf Shipping Routes Amid Rising Tensions

Iran’s Defence Council has issued a strong warning, stating that any military action targeting its southern coastline or nearby islands could trigger measures to restrict access to key Gulf shipping routes.

According to reports from state media, such a response may include the deployment of sea mines in strategic areas.

The warning comes amid reports that the United States is weighing options to increase pressure on Tehran, including the possibility of taking control of or imposing a blockade on Kharg Island—Iran’s primary oil export terminal.

The move is reportedly aimed at compelling Iran to ensure unrestricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy supply.

“Any attempt to attack Iran’s coasts or islands will cause all access routes in the Gulf to be mined with various types of sea mines, including floating mines that can be released from the coast,” the statement read.

“In this case, the entire Gulf will practically be in a situation similar to the Strait of Hormuz for a long time. One should not forget the failure of more than 100 minesweepers in the 1980s in removing a few sea mines.”
