Orbán Ousted After 16 Years as Hungary Votes for Pro-EU Shift

Hungary’s long-serving Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has been voted out of power after 16 years, following a landmark election that delivered a decisive victory to opposition leader Péter Magyar and his Tisza party.

According to multiple international reports, Hungarians turned out in record numbers—exceeding 77–80% voter participation — in what has been described as one of the most consequential elections in the country’s post-communist history.

Preliminary and near-final results show Magyar’s party securing a commanding parliamentary majority, reportedly winning around 138 out of 199 seats—enough to potentially enact sweeping constitutional reforms.

Orbán, who conceded defeat, described the outcome as “painful but unambiguous,” acknowledging that voters had chosen a different direction for the country after over a decade of nationalist leadership.

Orbán’s defeat comes amid growing domestic dissatisfaction over economic challenges, including rising inflation, stagnating wages, and declining living standards.

His government had also faced sustained criticism from the European Union and international watchdogs over alleged democratic backsliding, including restrictions on media freedom, judicial independence, and civil rights.

On the international stage, Orbán had positioned himself as a key critic of EU policies, particularly opposing military and financial support for Ukraine in its war against Russia — further straining Hungary’s relationship with Brussels.
