2027 Presidency: Opposition Unity Crumbles as Tinubu Faces 17 Challengers

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is beginning to take a clearer shape, but one major question continues to hang over the opposition: can Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and other opposition figures put their differences aside and rally behind one candidate?

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has now published the final list of presidential candidates for the 2027 election, with 18 political parties presenting candidates for the presidency. Among the major contenders are incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC and Peter Obi of the NDC.

The development comes at a crucial point in the race, with the presidential campaign period already underway.

But while Tinubu’s camp appears increasingly organised around his re-election bid, the opposition remains divided over how best to challenge the incumbent.

There have been repeated efforts to create a broad opposition alliance, but disagreements over who should lead, which candidate should step aside and how the coalition should be structured continue to threaten the idea of a single opposition candidate. Recent reports have highlighted the difficulties surrounding possible cooperation between Atiku, Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and other opposition figures.

The stakes are particularly high because the 2023 election demonstrated how multiple opposition candidates can split the anti-incumbent vote. Analysts and political actors are therefore again debating whether the opposition can avoid repeating that pattern in 2027.

At the same time, the APC has been publicly mobilising behind Tinubu. Recent reports indicate that APC governors have reaffirmed their support for the President’s re-election and pledged to mobilise for him across their respective states.

With the final presidential candidates now officially known, the political battle is moving from speculation to a more defined contest.

The big question Nigerians will be watching in the months ahead is no longer simply “Who wants to be President?”, it is: Can the opposition find one candidate capable of stopping Tinubu’s bid for a second term?
