Transport Allowance: FG Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Payment
Nigeria's Federal Government approves a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for six months. Find out when payments begin and what labour says.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers for 6 months, beginning in November 2026. This agreement was reached with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) during a meeting in Abuja on October 27, 2026, to address rising transportation costs and workers’ welfare. If implemented for the full period, eligible workers would receive a total of ₦420,000. Source: Premium Times.
This agreement will provide for the intervention across worker categories, while the government also encouraged state and local governments to adopt similar measures. However, the memorandum did not provide detailed eligibility conditions or the exact payment date and disbursement process. The allowance is a temporary six-month intervention, not an increase in the national minimum wage.
Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has decided to reject the arrangement, arguing that a permanent salary increase would provide more sustainable relief than temporary allowances. The union proposed raising the minimum salary for the lowest-paid federal worker to ₦300,000. The government and NLC have also agreed to begin fresh minimum wage negotiations, although they have yet to settle on an implementation date.
