Badejo-Okunsanya has won the Nigerian Bar Association’s presidential to become the second woman to lead the body in it’s 66-years history. The senior advocate of Nigeria polled 12,317 votes, representing approximately 47.18% of the cast.
Badejo-Okunsanya defeated her closest rivals, Lateef Akangbe, who secured 7,934 votes, and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, who polled 5,855 votes. The election held via a 24-hours electronic voting, saw a total of 26,184 lawyers cast ballots of over 82,000 registered voters.
The process of course wasn’t without drama, as a cyberattack initially disrupted the voting portal, forcing the electoral committee to migrate to a new and secured domain. The voting was extended and eventually completed without further incident.
Badejo-Okusanya became the NBA’s 33rd president, following in the footsteps of Priscilla Kuye, who was the first female president from 1991 to 1992. She will be formally inaugurated at the NBA’s Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt this August.
