Omoyele Sowore, a well-known politician and human rights activist was allegedly persecuted by the Tinubu administration in a statement made on July 18, following his recent release from Kuje correctional centre. The AAC presidential candidate says he was jailed over a post he made tagging the President of Nigeria as “a criminal”.
Sowore’s bail was revoked in June after he missed a court date, leading to his detention until a fresh ₦200 million bail was granted with conditions. He also turned his attention to what he calls the plight of hundreds of other inmates awaiting trials.
Among the cases he raised, the most prominent is Haruna Garba Gololo, whom he says remained in custody for weeks despite being granted bail over case tied to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He also talked on a case involving Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, alleging near-impossible bail conditions like requiring a serving Army colonel as surety.
According to Sowore, about 817 are awaiting trial, with 47 reportedly diagnosed with tuberculosis. Rights group SERAP has separately called his detention “unjustified,” while the Presidency has not responded to the allegations.
