The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing fresh scrutiny as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), investigate the utilization of a ₦12 billion Federal Government intervention fund.

This development comes amid growing concerns over the administration of Nigeria’s national football teams and the handling of funds meant to address outstanding financial obligations to players and staff.

What Is the ₦12bn NFF Fund For?

The Federal Government released the ₦12 billion intervention fund in January 2024 to the NFF to help settle outstanding obligations involving players across Nigeria’s national teams. The funds were reportedly intended to address issues including players’ unpaid bonuses and some financial commitments connected to the national teams.

The handling of these funds has now come under scrutiny as questioning continues to surround the NFF’s administration.

EFCC and ICPC Examine How the Money Was Used

The EFCC and ICPC are reportedly looking into how the ₦12 billion intervention fund was managed. The involvement of the two anti-corruption agencies places additional pressure on the NFF at a time when the federation is already facing criticism over the performance and administration of Nigeria’s national teams.

The agencies’ inquiries are expected to determine whether the intervention funds were used for their intended purposes and whether any irregularities occurred in their management.

The Senate Committee on Sports had also summoned NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko to discuss the declining fortunes of Nigeria’s national teams.

If investigators find any evidence of financial wrongdoing, the matter could progress to further investigation or prosecution in accordance with the law.

Until then, all allegations surrounding the ₦12 billion fund should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing by the NFF or any individual official. For Nigerian football fans, the investigation adds another layer to the growing calls for transparency and accountability in the administration of the country’s national teams.
