The Champions League draw takes place in Monaco today as 36 of Europe’s biggest clubs prepare to know their opponents for the 2026/27 league phase. UEFA has already confirmed the four pots containing the 36 participating teams.
Unlike the old group-stage system, every club will face 8 different opponents during the league phase, with two opponents coming from each of the four pots.
That means clubs in Pot 1, for example, can expect to face two teams from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, two from Pot 3, and two from Pot 4.

Although Pot 4 contains the lowest-ranked teams in the draw, the clubs will still be hoping to avoid difficult away trips and potentially awkward opponents.
What Happens During the Draw?
The league-phase draw will determine 8 opponents for each of the 36 clubs.
Each team will play four matches at home and four away, facing two opponents from each pot. UEFA’s draw system also places restrictions on clubs facing teams from the same association and limits how many opponents they can have from another association.
This format means a club could potentially be handed several heavyweight fixtures before reaching the knockout stage.
For Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, attention will be on which European giants they could face and whether their schedules will give them a favourable route into the knockout rounds.
The top 8 teams in the league phase will automatically qualify for the last 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th will enter the knockout phase play-offs.
The bottom eight teams will be eliminated from the competition.
With all 36 clubs confirmed and all pots officially filled, the only question left is “who gets who“?
