NDLEA Uncovered Fentanyl Precursor in Ogun Forest Meth Lab
NDLEA has revealed that a chemical found in an Ogun forest meth lab could be used to produce fentanyl after a ₦480bn drug seizure.
The NDLEA Ogun meth lab investigation has taken another turn after forensic analysis revealed that one of the chemicals recovered from the facility could be used in the production of fentanyl.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency disclosed the discovery after their analysis of the chemicals seized from the laboratory, which was dismantled in a remote forest in Ogun State earlier this year.
According to Punch News, the laboratory was uncovered in Abidagba Forest, Ijebu East Local Government Area, following months of intelligence gathering by NDLEA operatives. The operation led to the arrest of 10 suspects, including 3 Mexican nationals and 7 Nigerians.
NDLEA stated that about 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and chemicals were recovered during the operation, with the total value estimated at approximately ₦480 billion.
The agency initially focused on dismantling what it described as a massive industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory hidden deep inside the forest. However, forensic examination of the recovered chemicals further revealed the presence of a precursor chemical associated with fentanyl production.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig-Gen Buba Marwa, said the agency was able to identify the chemical through forensic equipment supplied with support from the United States International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau.
The discovery has raised further concerns about the scale and sophistication of the alleged drug operation, particularly because fentanyl is an extremely potent synthetic opioid associated with fatal overdoses. The 10 suspects have since faced legal proceedings in connection with the alleged operation, while the NDLEA has continued its efforts to dismantle the network and prevent the seized substances from entering circulation.
The Ogun operation was previously described by NDLEA as the largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratory uncovered in Nigeria. The agency said the operation involved a Nigeria-based drug trafficking organisation and Mexican collaborators.
As proceedings continue, authorities will focus on establishing how the laboratory operated, the intended destination of the drugs and chemicals, and the wider network allegedly connected to the facility.
