British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that he has not lost authority and will remain in office, even as growing political pressure and recent cabinet resignations intensify scrutiny of his leadership.
Starmer made the remarks following the resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey and other senior officials over disagreements on defence spending.
Healey and other ministers reportedly stepped down in protest against what they described as insufficient funding for the UK armed forces amid rising global security threats, including tensions linked to Russia.
Despite the crisis, Starmer dismissed suggestions that his leadership was weakening, saying he would “turn things around” and continue leading the government through the current challenges.
“I’m not going to walk away,” Starmer told the BBC.
“Let me just be clear with you, that’s not about personal vanity, it’s not about stubbornness, it’s out of a very deep sense of duty. I was elected to serve this country, notwithstanding the difficult circumstances. That is what I am doing.”
“Whoever is prime minister is going to face the same prevailing winds as I am facing. None of that is going to change,” Starmer said.
