Atiku Questions Tinubu’s Absence as Shettima Leads Nigeria at UNGA

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s decision not to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New York on Monday to represent Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s delegation. Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements.

Atiku, through his media aide, questioned the constitutional and political implications of Tinubu’s prolonged absence and demanded clarity over who is exercising presidential authority while the President is away.

The Federal Government, however, has explained that Tinubu is currently on annual leave and deliberately mandated Shettima to represent him. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the arrangement does not diminish Nigeria’s diplomatic standing.

The development comes as political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election continues to intensify, with both the ruling party and opposition figures increasingly positioning themselves for the election.
