Iran Threatens Red Sea Trade Blockade as US Tightens Naval Pressure

Iran’s military has issued a stark warning that it could block major global shipping routes including the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman if the United States continues its naval blockade on Iranian ports, significantly escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to statements carried by Iranian state media, senior military commander Ali Abdollahi said Tehran would respond decisively if the US blockade disrupts Iranian commercial vessels and oil tankers.
He warned that Iran’s armed forces “will not allow any exports or imports to continue” across key maritime corridors if its economic lifelines are threatened.
The threat follows Washington’s decision to impose a sweeping naval blockade on Iranian ports earlier this week after diplomatic talks between both countries collapsed.
The United States says the move is aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran, particularly over its nuclear programme and regional activities.
US Central Command has since confirmed that the blockade is already having a significant impact, with several ships attempting to leave Iranian ports forced to turn back.
The operation, involving thousands of troops, warships, and surveillance assets, has effectively halted much of Iran’s maritime trade within days.
