NATO Distances Itself from U.S. Iran Blockade Plan

Key members of the NATO have declined to participate in a U.S.-led plan to impose a naval blockade on Iran, deepening divisions within the Western alliance as tensions in the Gulf continue to rise.

Officials from several NATO countries said on Monday that while they remain committed to regional stability, they will not join the military operation announced by U.S. President Donald Trump targeting Iranian ports.

Instead, allies indicated they are prepared to play a role only after active hostilities subside, focusing on peacekeeping, maritime security, and rebuilding efforts.

According to reports European powers such as the United Kingdom and France have expressed concern that the blockade could further escalate the conflict and disrupt global energy supplies, particularly through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomats warned that direct involvement in the blockade risks dragging the alliance into a broader war with Iran.

“We’re not supporting the blockade,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the BBC.

“My decision has been very clearly that whatever the pressure, and there’s been some considerable pressure, we’re not getting dragged into the war,” he said.
