The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration across Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, according to a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani. The declaration means it’s citizens will observe a work-free day on Tuesday as Muslims across the country commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

Why August 25 Is a Public Holiday

Eid-ul-Mawlid is observed by Muslims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is marked by prayers, religious gatherings.

According to the Federal Government, the occasion provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on values such as compassion, humility and peaceful coexistence. Tunji-Ojo also congratulated Muslim faithful on the celebration and urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote unity, tolerance and peaceful relations across the country.

When Will Nigerians Resume Work?

The declared public holiday covers Tuesday, August 25, meaning workers who observe the Federal Government’s holiday schedule will have a day off. Normal work activities are expected to resume on Wednesday, August 26, although some private businesses and organisations may operate according to their individual schedules.

The declaration applies nationwide and is intended to give Nigerians the opportunity to observe Eid-ul-Mawlid.
