A senior Iranian delegation has travelled to Switzerland ahead of planned discussions with the United States, marking a new diplomatic effort aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries.
Iranian state media confirmed the delegation’s departure, while U.S. Vice President JD Vance said he would soon join the negotiations.
The talks, expected to begin on Sunday in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, will focus on implementing a framework reached through the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” with Pakistan and Qatar involved as mediators.
The U.S. delegation, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had already arrived in Switzerland ahead of the meeting.
Discussions are expected to address issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and wider regional security concerns.
However, the diplomatic efforts come amid renewed tensions in the Middle East, particularly over fighting involving Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon.
The situation has created uncertainty around whether the negotiations can deliver a lasting breakthrough.
