Trump Blasts NATO as Rutte Admits Alliance Strains Over Iran War

U.S. President Donald Trump openly vented his frustration with NATO during a high-stakes White House meeting with Secretary-General Mark Rutte, as divisions within the alliance deepened over the ongoing Iran war.

The meeting exposed serious cracks in transatlantic unity, with Washington pushing for stronger military backing while several European allies remain reluctant to get directly involved in the conflict.

Trump, who has long criticized NATO over burden-sharing, reportedly expressed anger at what he views as a lack of support from key European members.

His frustration comes amid disagreements over access to strategic routes and the level of military participation in the Middle East.

Speaking after the meeting, Rutte acknowledged the tension and did not shy away from admitting shortcomings within the alliance.

“Some allies were tested and failed,” Rutte said in an interview with CNN following the talks, a rare public admission of division within NATO.

He also described Trump as “clearly disappointed” with the level of support from Europe, highlighting the widening gap between the United States and its traditional allies.

Despite the criticism, Rutte attempted to strike a balanced tone, emphasizing that the alliance is not entirely fractured.

“The majority… fulfilled commitments,” he added, noting that several countries contributed through logistics, intelligence, and indirect support rather than direct combat involvement.

The NATO chief further characterized the discussions with Trump as

“open and honest… between two good friends,”

signaling efforts to preserve diplomatic ties despite the growing strain.
